Philadelphia, PA
Philly is a great city to visit! It boasts with interesting and appealing cultural and art museums and historic sites, and offers visitors a thriving nighlife and a rich and varied shopping scene - all the necessary ingredients in order to make one's stay more than enjoyable. Whether you're an outdoor or an indoor person, whether you're in the city with friends or family, there is always something fun to do in Philadelphia, whatever your prefferences or tastes are! Among the most popular and favorite of Philly's attractions, there are:
Philadelphia Museum of Art, which sits majestically on a rise at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, featuring a vast and exquisite art collection which made it the third-largest art museum in the country, and an absolute must-see on the city’s cultural circuit. Among its impressive holdings in Renaissance, American, Impressionist and Modern art, some standouts include a great Rogier van der Weyden altarpiece, a large Bathers by Cezanne, a room devoted to Philadelphia’s own Thomas Eakins, and Marcel Duchamp’s notorious mixed-media Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors (The Large Glass).
Liberty Bell Center, which was cast in the Whitechapel Foundry in the East End of London and sent to the building currently known as Independence Hall, then the Pennsylvania State House, in 1753. This symbol of freedom features displays of larger-than-life historic documents and graphic images, exploring the facts and the myths surrounding the Bell. Soaring glass walls offer dramatic and powerful views of both the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, just a few steps away.
Longwood Gardens, a wonderful green piece of nature, featuring 11,000 different types of plants, pathways, exotic flowers, cacti, bromeliads, ferns and bonsai. Each season brings a different pleasure: spring magnolias and azaleas; summer roses and water lilies; fall foliage and chrysanthemums; and winter camellias, orchids and palms.
The Rocky Statues and the Rocky Steps, which after the Rocky Balboa film, have become a signature feature of the city. The fictional Rocky Balboa of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky movies was immortalized in bronze in 1980. After filming for the movie completed, Stallone donated the statue to the City of Philadelphia. As famous than the statue itself are the stairs leading to the East Entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, aka “The Rocky Steps.” Making the iconic trip up the steps is regarded as a symbol of perseverance and determination, therefore, each year, thousands of people, young and old, recreate the scene from the legendary movie and make the trek up the steps.
