About University of Illinois Champaign

University of Illinois Champaign, commonly referred to as U of I, UIUC, or simply Illinois, is a public research university, with its campus located approximately half-way between Champaign and Urbana, most of it being located in Urbana, which is the county seat of Champaign County, in the US state of Illinois, with a population of nearly 40 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2007 census.

U of I traces its roots back in 1862, when the Morrill Act of the same year, granted each state in USA a portion of land on which to establish a major public state university, being officially founded under the current name in 1982. It is the oldest, largest and most prestigious campus in the University of Illinois system, and consists of 18 colleges that offer over 150 programs of study.

Illinois’ undergraduate program has been ranked 39th among national universities and 9th among public universities, by the U.S. News & World Report, in 2010, and according to the 2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities, U of I is 25th among 1000 international institutions recognized. UIUC is also home to the highest-ranked engineering, computer science, library and information science, and accounting programs in USA, also being one of the 10 largest universities by undergraduate enrollment in the country, having an enrollment of more than 40 000 students, the majority of them being undergraduates.

The athletic teams from U of I are known as the Fighting Illini, who compete the NCAA Division 1, (the university also being a member of the Big Ten Conference), in various sports, including basketball, football and tennis. The Illini experienced victory many times in the past years, including in October, 1910, when the football team defeated the University of Chicago Maroons, with a score of 3-0, and in November 2007, when they defeated the 1st ranked Ohio State football team in Ohio Stadium, the first time when they managed to beat a 1st ranked team on road.

U of I produced a series of notable alumni, since it first opened its doors, among the most resonant name son the list being: Edward Doisy – Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine, Michael Colgrass – Pulitzer Prize winner in music, Alvin Bowman - President, Illinois State University, James Thomson - Professor of Microbiology, University of Wisconsin – Madison, Barbara Bain - winner of three consecutive Emmy Awards for the role of Cinnamon Carter in Mission: Impossible, Henry Bacon - Architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., as well as many other great people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
